  MANUFACTURERS:

  • Atlas has just released their N Scale Trainmasters decorated in the Maroon and Grey scheme with the following road numbers available: #8905, #8907, #49565. I got a demo in the hobby store and they run very quiet and very smooth! A far cry from the N scale of my childhood. I had debated going with N scale for my future Kettle Valley layout because of the realistic scenery to trains ratios but felt I was too far along in HO to make the switch now. Seeing these Trainmasters in action made me somewhat regret that decision!

  • Also just out is the limited run of HO scale Budd Rail Diesel Cars from Life-Like Proto 1000. They feature a heavy die cast frame, four wheel drive, eight wheel electrical pick up, five pole skew-wound armature motor. a detailed interior and come in several CPR paint schemes and road numbers. It was RDC #9100 that on January 17, 1964 made the last passenger train run on the KVR from Spences Bridge through to Midway.

    • Canadian Pacific - Maroon & yellow with yellow end stripes. Road Number 9100 and 9101
    • Canadian Pacific - Maroon & yellow with hockey mask ends. Road Number 9100 and 9102

  • Well ok, not really new but I found this photo of the PFM brass Kettle Valley 5-car passenger car set imported by Van Hobbies years ago. The Baggage; baggage-mail combine; coach; sleper; and observation car were based on the construcion article by Gib Kennedy in the June1959 Model Railroader. The set can still be found, both painted and unpainted, at hobby stores selling consignment brass and occasionally on eBay, which is where I found this photo.

  • The Proto 1000 Canadian Pacific C-Liners are out! The locomotives feature accurate details including hand applied grab irons and stair rails. You can choose from 3 Fans, vertical-style grill & horizontal louvers at the back in either the block or script lettering or 3 Fans, horizontal-style grill & Triangular window behind cab again in either the block or script lettering. The loco features proper directional lighting and scale speed. Central Hobbies out of Vancouver BC has a page of info on Proto 1000 C-Liners as well as a page with the CPR C-Liner roster and a photo page with images from the BC Archives.

  • Also, just annonced are the forthcoming release of a Proto 1000 Canadian Pacific C-Liner B-Units!! They will feature the same quality and detail as the "A" units including proper directional and scale speeds. The scale speeds of the "B" units are matched with the "A" units, so they pull together in a set. Check out Life Like's website for more info. Note:

Be warned however there are many mistakes and/or some typos on the list of models so you might want to wait till they fix it.

  • Athabasca Scale Models has recently developed etched brass kits to convert the Bachman Spectrum 2-8-0 Consolidation to resemble a Canadian Pacific locomotive. The Bachman 2-8-0 is an excellent model which runs well right out of the box. Athabasca has come up with a kit for a CPR Vestibule Cab that, together with the CPR running board valances and front step plate that are included with the kit, give the locomotive a very strong CPR family resemblence. There is also a kit for a oil bunker conversion for the Backman tender. Some extra "Minatures by Eric" detail castings finish the conversion.

I have just started putting mine together but I am amazed at how well the kit is going together. I'm soldering the main cab together but for the rest I am using gap-filling CA (which Athabasca says is ok) and so far have no problems to report. I'm looking forward to finishing the cab and installing it on the locomotive. Considering how much brass locomotives cost with no guarantee that they will run reliably I'm happy have a nice running loco that will have the look of a CPR engine.

Check out Athabasca's website for ordering info or inquire at your local hobby store.

  • Athabasca has also released a follow up conversion kit for the Bachman Spectrum USRA 4-8-2 Light Mountain. The kit includes a vestibule cab and CPR style running boards. As well, they've also put out a kit for a CPR steam locomotive snowplow. I haven't built it yet but it looks neat!

  • Alder Models produces a line of Switch Stands are available in five styles including both CPR tall and short stands. They are available for HO, S & O as a six-pack of "dummy" stands (one style/pack) and as individual working stands. "Dummy" stands are non-working stands that can be placed near turnouts to add realism to your layout (includes stands and targets). Working stands are operated by.the turnout and come complete with stand, ties, target, slide/housing and brass nails.

  • Brian Pate has been producing some excellent casting sets for Canadian Pacific protypes. The resin castings are of high quality with only a small amount of flash. The detail is very fine with no noticable imperfections. You will need to supply some parts, wire, etc. but the sets come with detailed illustrated instructions.

Prices are in Canadian dollars. Payment either by check or money order.

    • CP 2200-series Lightweight First Class Passenger Coach
The kit includes castings for the major body components, including the underbody and brake components. There is a separate kit included for the correct trucks for the car with wheelsets, and etched brass parts are included for the corner steps, stirrups and end gates.

You need to supply paint, decals, couplers, diaphragms, a brake wheel, steam and air hoses, plus wire and chain for the level of detail you want. The instructions, which are profusely illustrated with model and prototype photos, tell you what to get, and suggest manufacturers.

The cost of this kit is $65 (Canadian) or $45 (US funds), plus a shipping and handling fee of $7 (Canadian) or $6 (US) for up to 4 kits in a single box. See above for ordering info.

The matching CP 4700 baggage car and 3700 and 3600 mail and express cars are in the planning stages now.

    • CP 284414-288477 series Wood Freight Reefer
The CPR recieved two main batches of steel-underframe, wood freight reefers. The first, built by the National Steel Car Corporation between 1916 and 1929, is the prototype for this casting set. The cars lasted in revenue service until mechanical refridgeration was introduced in the 50's and 60's. They continued after that in company ice service until the late 70's.

The set consits of detailed castings of ridgid polyurethane and includes all the major AB brake system components together with the parts required for either the earlier planked roof platforms around the ice hatches or the later foot rails, and either the propane heater or charcoal heater systems, and hatches that can be either open or closed.

As in the flat car and stone car below, this are a casting set and instructions, not a complete kit. That is to say, you need to supply wire, chain, styrene strip, etc in addition to the usual trucks, couplers, paint and decals. The instructions are illustrated with CPR plans and over 20 photographs. He also has sets for CN and GTW reefers for those so inclined! The sets are priced at $25 (Can.) or $17.50 (US) per set plus $6 (Can.) or $5 (US) shipping and handling. See above for ordering info.

    • CP 336260-series 40-ton Flat Car and 338100-series Stone Car
Brian has also made up some excellent casting sets of two CP prototype cars... #105, a 336260-series 40-ton flat car and #106, 338100-series stone car. They consist of resin castings of the underframe, deck, ends, and in the case of the stone car, the low gondola sides. The castings are excellent with very fine detail and no air bubbles that I could see. The castings were developed from builder's photos, manufacturer's drawings, and from photos and measurments taken from the flat car at the Revelstoke Railway Museum.

Click on the small images below to see an enlarged photo of Brian's kits.

Brian wants to emphasize that these are not complete kits in the usual sense, which is why he describes them as casting sets. In addition to the usual trucks, couplers, paint and decals, you will need to supply some wire and other odds and ends, and a KC brake set for each. They do come with detailed instructions including drawings and prototype photos. I am looking forward to putting them together... Great work Brian!

The casting sets cost $7 for the flat car, and $10 for the stone car, plus $6 for postage and handling. See above for ordering info.

There is also some sheet styrene, fine wire, brake hoses, chain, a Tichy K brake set and a sheet of etched brass for the steps and roof ladder sides along with complete intructions. Trucks and couplers not included.

NOTE: I have recieved notice that some people have been having trouble contacing or ordering from The Old Caboose. I don't know if they are still in business or not. My best suggestion is to keep an eye out for their kits at hobby stores and flea markets - might be your best bet.
